Madakaripura Waterfall, Gadjah Mada’s Meditation Place

It is said that Madakaripura Waterfall was the place where Patih Gadjah Mada meditated for the last time, before moksa. This myth refers to the choice of the name Madakaripura which was taken from three related words.

Mada is part of Gadjah Mada, Kari means heritage, and Pura means prayer or meditation. Based on this story, local people believe that Madakaripura Waterfall is an eternal waterfall. The reason is, so far Madakaripura Waterfall has never experienced a drought.

The charm of Madakaripura Waterfall

One of the attractions of Madakaripura Waterfall is the cliff height of around 200 meters. This height also makes Madakaripura the highest waterfall on the island of Java and one of the highest waterfalls in Indonesia.

Apart from its height, the charm of Madakaripura Waterfall can also be seen from the shape of the cliffs around it. The cliff has a circular shape, at first glance like a towering giant glass.

Another unique thing is that the water not only flows from the middle of the waterfall, but also through narrow gaps in the cliffs. This makes the atmosphere under the waterfall seem as if it is raining. This is because the water dripping from all directions makes the area around the waterfall look like it is drizzling.

Therefore, if you visit Madakaripura Waterfall, you are advised to wear a raincoat so you don’t get wet. The fall of the water also creates very dramatic water waves and forms a natural pool under the waterfall. The water in this natural pool has a transparent blue color and is refreshing to the eyes.

How to Get to Madakaripura Waterfall

To get to the Madakaripura Waterfall location, Parekraf friends can rely on public transportation or private vehicles. From Probolinggo City, Parekraf friends must drive towards Branggah Hamlet, Negororejo Village, Lumbang District. This location is approximately 37 km from the center of Probolinggo City.

Arriving at the entrance to Madakaripura Waterfall, whether using private vehicles or public transportation, tourists still have to do trekking to get to the location of the waterfall. This journey takes approximately 20 minutes from the entrance.

The best time to visit Madakaripura Waterfall is the end of the rainy season, namely between May and June. It is also better to visit in the morning, because the weather is likely to be sunny.
